biography contents d. 4 Oct. Biography! 1850 in Hinesburg, Vt. From the Red River Settlement to Manitoba (1812–70) The Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences of 1864. Introductory Essays of the DCB/DBC. And Men Essay! Canada’s Wartime Prime Ministers. “the object [of a biographical dictionary of Canada] shall be not only to supply an acknowledged want in Canadian literature, but . . . it should compete with or even surpass works of a similar character produced elsewhere.” Foundation: James Nicholson’s Bequest. The Dictionary of Canadian biography / Dictionnaire biographique du Canada was made possible by an imaginative and public-spirited bequest of James Nicholson, a Toronto businessman, who, at his death in 1952, left the residue and bulk of his estate to biography essay, the University of Toronto for the purpose of creating a biographical reference work for Canada of make 5 pages research, truly national importance. Mr Nicholson’s bequest, probably among the rubric most remarkable made thus far in Canada for a literary or historical purpose, arose out of make research paper, his interest in essay rubric Canadian and English history, which was maintained through a long life of vs book, varied activities. Biography! Born in Liverpool, he was the eldest of the three sons of John Nicholson of Forton, North Lancashire, England.

In 1891, on the threshold of what must have appeared a promising professional career as an architect, Mr Nicholson came to Canada. The period was one of economic depression and there was little inducement to attempt a career in architecture. After a year of farming near Lindsay, Ontario, he went to the city of London and entered the office of “Bart Cottam Co., Importer and Manufacturer of Grocer’s Sundries.” First among the essays and locke numerous items in the firm’s advertisements was “bird seed,” and doubtless it was in Bart Cottam’s employ that Mr Nicholson decided to biography, concentrate upon the product which was in the next half-century to reward his business acumen and make it possible for him to found and endow the Dictionary. In 1895 he settled in Toronto, establishing with J. On Hobbes And Locke! W. Brock the firm of Nicholson and Brock, with which he was identified during the remainder of his active business life. Mr Nicholson’s business interests kept him in touch for many years with all parts of Canada, and this was undoubtedly one of the influences which led him to think of what would become a grand project. He learned French at a time when this was certainly an uncommon accomplishment for a Toronto businessman.

The idea for a dictionary of Canadian biography appears to have come directly from Mr Nicholson’s pleasure in and admiration for the Dictionary of national biography (now the Oxford dictionary of biography essay, national biography ). Of special interest and importance is the fact that the Dictionary has been published in two editions, English and make paper French: the Dictionary of Canadian biography by the University of Toronto Press, and Dictionnaire biographique du Canada by Les Presses de l’Université Laval. Biography Essay Rubric! This arrangement broke new ground since no comparable project of a similar kind in research and research paper publication had previously been undertaken in biography rubric Canada. At the time of the original announcement of the founding in 1959 it was stated that contributions would be accepted in object recognition either French or English and it was hoped that a French edition might also be arranged. An approach was made to the Université Laval, and there was sincere rejoicing at biography, Toronto when the authorities at Laval enthusiastically undertook the responsibility. Uc Berkeley Archive! The formal announcement of the French edition was made at a lancement in essay rubric Quebec on the evening of 10 March 1961. Since then work on the dictionary has been carried out in on hobbes and locke English and essay French by two teams, and make research under General Editor George W. Biography Essay Rubric! Brown and une ardente patience Directeur adjoint Marcel Trudel, the rubric first volume was published in both languages in 1966. In 2001 the two universities signed a legal agreement that officially recognizes the make 5 pages research paper collaboration. The dcb/dbc has been in existence for more than 50 years an rubric achievement to be celebrated. Change, as well as continuity, has been a major feature of the project in the first years of the essays and locke 21st century.

Nothing more satisfyingly portrayed continuity than the appearance of volume XV (in 2005) under the sign of Johannes Gutenberg represented by the University of Toronto Press and Les Presses de l’Université Laval. Nothing more dramatically demonstrated change than the electronic versions of the dcb/dbc . First, as a project to celebrate the essay millennium, a CD-ROM of volumes I to XIV was created and distributed without charge to every high school, CEGEP, college, university, and public library in Canada, and to select university libraries around the world in 2000. In 2001 the research paper federal Department of Canadian Heritage, in conjunction with Library and Archives Canada, approached the two universities about establishing a website, and two years later the texts of the 14 published volumes, together with some additional biographies, including those of 12 significant individuals whose death dates are post-1930, were made available online through LAC, without the fees commonly required to use the online versions of major reference works. Biographies from volume XV were gradually added to the website before and after the release of the printed volume. The staff of the dcb/dbc has been especially pleased to make the biography rubric results of the work done by hundreds of Canadian scholars, professional and non-professional, accessible to thousands of readers all over the world. A winner of many prizes, most recently (2012) the Governor General’s Award for Popular History (the Pierre Berton Award), the Dictionary of Canadian Biography has been recognized at home and abroad as a “masterpiece.” Over the years public and private support has been demonstrated by individuals and brock zone institutions, most notably in 2011 when, through a contribution agreement, the Department of Canadian Heritage undertook to provide funding for three years. In the introduction to biography rubric, volume XV, General Editor Ramsay Cook and university essay zone Directeur général adjoint Réal Bélanger stated: “We believe we have again fulfilled the mandate set for us by our original benefactor and patron saint, Mr James Nicholson, who declared that ‘the object [of a biographical dictionary of Canada] shall be not only to supply an acknowledged want in Canadian literature, but . . Essay! . it should compete with or even surpass works of a similar character produced elsewhere.’ Again, we have competed and surpassed.” This is a motto, and a standard, that will remain constant whatever else may change. There are now almost 8,500 biographies on this website, comprising the complete contents of volumes I to XV, which describe the lives of object recognition, those whose deaths or whose last-known activities occurred in the years 1000 to 1930.

Also included are entries on voyagers whose verifiable dates precede 1000 Saint Brendan (Bréanainn), Eirikr Thorvaldsson (Eric the Red), and Herjólfsson Bjarni and more than 70 biographies of rubric, individuals who died after 1930. (We even have the story of Peter Kerrivan, a person who never existed!) For information about the date spans of each volume, see below. In September 2011 the dcb/dbc took over the website from essay Library and Archives Canada. Biography Essay Rubric! This development has represented major challenges, but also wonderful opportunities: for example, we have been releasing a new biography each week, mostly from the volume in progress, XVI, which covers the lives of those who died or whose last-known activity was during the 19311940 period (click on “New Biographies” in the sidebar to find out more). Part 1: Answers on Historically Black Colleges and biography Universities. Dr. Marybeth Gasman from the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Walter Kimbrough , president of dissertation patience, Philander Smith College in biography essay, Little Rock, are taking questions on object recognition, historically black colleges and universities. More than 100 American institutions are classified by the government as historically black colleges and universities through a formal program intended “to overcome the essay rubric, effects of discriminatory treatment and to object recognition thesis, strengthen and expand the capacity of historically black colleges and essay universities to provide quality education.”

This week in object recognition thesis, the guidance office of essay, The Choice, we’ve asked two experts on such colleges to field select reader questions. They are Dr. Marybeth Gasman, an associate professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania who studies historically black colleges, and Dr. Walter Kimbrough, the president of one such institution, Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark. You may post a question using the object recognition, comment box on rubric, the original post, or the make 5 pages paper, box below. Answers will continue this week. — Jacques Steinberg. What is the perceived benefit to biography rubric, students? Dr. Of Mice Movie Essay. Gasman responds: Historically black colleges and universities offer a choice to African-Americans and other students. For African-Americans, in essay rubric, particular, they offer an environment that tends to be free of white racism and daily racial aggressions.

This kind of environment can be wonderfully empowering; students are not distracted from learning. Of Mice Movie. In addition, students find many role models who look like them and in many cases have similar backgrounds. This, again, is empowering. Historically black colleges and biography essay universities offer small classes and dedicated faculty members who spend ample time outside the classroom with students. One of the best examples of zone, what they offer students is biography found in the sciences. At Spelman College in Atlanta, for instance, instead of an ethos of recognition thesis, “weeding out,” the college boasts one of rubric, success through collaboration and support among the students. I recently conducted a study at Spelman related to black women in the sciences, and what I heard from the of mice and men movie essay, women was, “If my ‘sister’ succeeds, I succeed.” This kind of statement and tone is very different from the atmosphere of many science programs at historically white institutions with programs that sometimes foster unhealthy, zero-sum competition among students. Spelman and another all-female black college, Bennett College for Women, in North Carolina, are responsible for sending 50 percent of black women into graduate science programs. Other historically black colleges and universities have similar success stories. Xavier University of rubric, Louisiana offers another example in terms of its success in the area of preparation for medical school. This small school, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Katrina, sends about recognition 100 students to medical school each year, more than any other college or university in the country.

These students, with the essay rubric, help of intense classes, summer research activities and nurturing faculty are successful in medical school and pass their medical board exams. Are white students accepted? Dr. Gasman responds: Absolutely! White students (as well as members of any other racial or ethnic group) are welcome and have always been welcome at black colleges. It’s important to note that historically black colleges and uc berkeley thesis universities are “historically” black institutions, just as the majority of colleges and universities in the United States are “historically” white institutions. Black colleges were established because African-Americans were systematically excluded from historically white institutions. Today, growing percentages of whites, Latinos and Asians are attending black colleges.

These students have figured out that historically black colleges and biography universities offer tuition rates that are roughly 50 percent less than those of historically white institutions as well as empowering environments that boast close faculty-student relationships. Of note, private black colleges tend to have fewer white students, although recently, Morehouse College in Atlanta — a private, all-male historically black institution — had a white valedictorian. Research Paper. According to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which represents public black colleges and universities, blacks make up 85 percent of public historically black colleges and universities, with whites accounting for 8 percent, Latinos 6 percent and Asians 2 percent. If you look at the makeup of most historically white institutions, you’ll find a large white majority and similar percentages of racial and ethnic minorities. Essay Rubric. Below is a list of the historically black colleges and universities with the largest percentages of and men movie vs book essay, white students: Bluefield State University: 88.8 percent.

West Virginia State University: 83 percent. Lincoln University, Missouri: 64 percent. Shelton State Community College: 65 percent. Drake State Technical College: 47 percent. Kentucky State University: 35 percent. Bishop State Community College: 33 percent. Saint Phillips College: 31 percent. Langston University, Oklahoma: 23 percent. Elizabeth City State University: 22 percent. Tennessee State University: 21 percent. Fayetteville State University: 20 percent.

Source: U.S. News World Report, Black Excel.com (numbers are from essay, 2008; newer data not yet available). Given today’s economic climate, how are historically black colleges and thesis archive universities able to essay rubric, remain competitive for students of all skills and abilities? Some traditional Ivy League universities have very attractive programs designed to lure black students with four-year scholarships. Dr. Kimbrough responds: For the most part, historically black colleges and universities have always recruited a very diverse student, from those who are at the highest levels of academic talent who are being courted by every school, including Ivies, to students who barely got out of high school but want to attend college even though they need quite a bit of remediation. This is a great task, but I think there have been successes throughout this spectrum of make 5 pages paper, ability. After Brown v. Board of Education, every college wanted black students. So historically black colleges and biography rubric universities went from having all the students to themselves to sharing students.

When critical masses of black students ended up on other campuses, these students began pushing not only for more black students but also for black faculty and staff, relevant curricula, etc. Dissertation. In an effort to meet these demands, institutions began developing extensive programs to biography essay, “buy” black students. Texas AM had one where there was $500,000 used solely to make counter offers to students of color. But the richest colleges have not significantly increased their numbers of of mice vs book, black students. Biography Essay Rubric. The main reason is that as a whole, black students have lower test scores than whites. Uc Berkeley Thesis Archive. The richest schools are very cognizant of biography essay, their U.S. News rankings, which reward them for the level of preparedness of their student body. While a Harvard, which makes enough money on its endowment every two weeks to pay a year’s tuition for all of its undergraduates, could offer free rides to make 5 pages, any black student it wanted to, they still want those with perfect ACT and SAT scores, and those students are few and far between. Lots of institutions are now boasting about programs that ensure lower- and middle-class students can attend at essay no cost, but few have reported the success of these programs with raw numbers. The reason? Very few students are benefiting because they still want a certain student, and bringing in thesis, lots of solid students with lower scores will hurt rankings.

But on essay, a more basic level, there is still a great deal of racial tension on college campuses these days. The “Compton Cookout” party at U.C. San Diego (and subsequent noose on campus) and the littering of the cultural center lawn with cotton balls at the University of Missouri — both within the last month — remind students and their families that there is essay zone a chance they may enter an environment filled with daily racial micro-aggressions like these. A free ride is essay great, but peace of mind is priceless. Comments are no longer being accepted. I went to well-regarded private school on the east coast for brock university zone undergrad and essay then a small, public historically black school for my masters. I was the only white person in my graduate program. Essay Zone. I was frequently asked by other white people why I was attending, did I fit in, and, almost every time, did I feel safe on the school’s rural/suburban campus. (odd, considering my undergrad institution was in a very high crime city, and essay rubric no one ever asked me that question back then…)

The answer to the last two questions was yes a whole-hearted yes. In class discussions, study sessions, meetings with faculty and administrators, I never felt out of place or unwelcome. I agree with what the experts say here – HBCUs in general have a sense of camaraderie, community and cooperation that is largely lacking from other universities. The schools have a commitment to helping students achieve and that is recognition thesis shared among students. We entered the program with varying levels of academic skills, by biography rubric, the end, those of us who passed our comprehensive exams and completed our thesis came back the next semester to mentor those who didn’t pass, until everyone finished. That’s unthinkable in most grad programs.

Compared to my undergrad experience – which was enriching, enjoyable and fiercely competitive, this atmosphere was a real gift. You felt like you achieved while also helping others and being helped along the way. That’s about as good a definition for an education as I can think of. Why did I decide to go there? I wish I could say it was for the reasons above. In truth, it was close to my house, had a class schedule that allowed me to keep working, and the in-state tuition meant pay-as-you go and a debt-free degree. The real benefits will stay with me forever. And despite eschewing a bigger-name grad program to a small school no one is familiar with, I found after graduation that employers found my choice of school suggestive that I could handle working in make 5 pages, a ‘diverse’ workplace, and it that’s been a real asset in biography essay, my career. I was an average high schooler with very little money. I made a chart of essays on hobbes and locke, 34 colleges comparing tuition, including historically black colleges in the east. The two HBCUs had such a low tuition I didn’t bother applying to biography essay, any others.

I was accepted and completed undergrad and dental school at essays and locke Howard in D.C. Most of the professors were top notch, although a few undergrad profs stuck out as anti-cooperative and negative in attitude. Some science profs were simply amazing and inspiring and their techniques remain with me after fifty years. The answer to the first question, about benefits to students, sounded strikingly familiar. “Students are not distracted from learning” is an argument well known to those who attend single-sex educational institutions. When I was a student at an all-girls’ high school, I found myself better able to rubric, concentrate on academics, as compared with my public middle school; I was freed from the object, distraction (and sometimes the biography essay rubric, stigma) of “being a girl.” I imagine the same is true for students who are distracted or stigmatized for race-related reasons. University Essay. Thank you for educating me.

I found the HBCU experience allowed me to come into myself w/o being cognizant of biography essay, my race. I went to all white/majority schools my whole life–and going to my HBCU was the uc berkeley thesis, first time I didn’t have to walk into class w/ my “second face” on. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything because I blossomed into being myself w/o having to rubric, hide behind the facade. HBCUs aren’t for and locke everyone. Debates like this are interesting, but they could never paint the rubric, whole picture. Are there substantial differences in the future potential of and locke, HBCs that are private versus those that are part of a state university system?

I received my master’s from an HBCU, and I am white. I wish I could agree with any of the above comments, except that it was cheaper. I did not experience a cooperative, antiracial environment, maybe because the HBCU I attended is located in the South. During several open class discussion, I was pointed at and made into the scapegoat for what white Southerns did before I was born. They never asked where my family was from (all northerners before me) or even what my true ancestrial history is (part Native American). I look white; that was enough. I wish I could say only the students made me into biography essay rubric, an “other,” but several of the professors did as well. One refused to 5 pages paper, write me a final test question, which was needed for my graduation and effectively delayed my graduation by a semester. Rubric. She wrote one for another girl who asked after me though who was not white. University Essay Zone. I didn’t really believe her “I don’t have time” arguement after that.

Another professor took every opportunity to try to force me to quit the program. She verbally abused me and did not process my paperwork like she did all the other students (she was the essay rubric, interim director), which effectively delayed my graduation twice as well. Things with her got so bad that I had to recognition thesis, call on the university’s omsbusman to assist. That person told me not to waste my time because the university would only make it harder for me to graduate. I grew up in a diverse community that was very embracing of other cultures, races and lifestyles. I had my eyes opened by attending an biography essay, HBCU. Archive. I hope we as a society can progress more before the next generation grows up.

I have put 3 kids through ivy league schools. Biography Rubric. I’m not saying I would not’ do it again, but what I would say to people of color is to not reject Morehouse and dissertation patience Spelman out of hand. What I noticed at the Ivies was that I saw many black kids entering as pre-med and abandoning it later. Anecdotally, I have found that pre-med students from the biography rubric, top black schools tend to make it through at much higher rates. Of course, I have no idea why that is. My guess is that the 5 pages research paper, combination of the more supportive environment/less the university trying to “weed people out” of pre-med by having an overly difficult first year set of courses has something to do with it. Morehouse boys, across the essay, board, seem to do exceptionally well. While I can’t speak to HBU/HBCs, I think its generally unfair to characterize other institutions as being zero sum when it comes to sciences.

Pre-med, certainly yes, that seems to object recognition thesis, be the case. But its very important to differentiate engineering and biography physics where that typically isn’t the case and as a whole communities are generally more cooperative. I know it sounds nit-picky but its already hard enough to get undergrads to recognition thesis, choose the sciences without any such perception issue. Most scientists find the pre-med attitudes disturbing and biography atypical of academic sciences. Movie Vs Book. Though this does lead to a corollary that if HBU/HBCs have encouraging environments for their premeds they are succeeding in a very important way and that’s really great to hear. Why aren’t majority white universities feet held to the fire for their poor success rate in inspiring underachievers of any race? If they are the so-called best then let them take the unwanted students HBCs specialize in inspiring and educating with joy to biography essay, become doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, astronauts, veterinarians, computer programmers…. Why can’t the patience, university with a white majority do it? Why can they ONLY succeed if they have the best? If you have the best you should get the best results, dah, no brainer, but that’s not a test of excellence!

It called cerebral recycling. College, much like many aspects of life is an environment where a key factor to individual success is the biography essay rubric, comfort level felt by recognition, individuals in those environments. My alma mater is one of the biography, mentioned HBCUs in this article and although my grades and SAT scores were an indication that I could have been successful at a myriad of educational institutions, I chose to place myself in a nurturing environment where I would not be overwhelmed by 5 pages, the white aggression that exists in society daily. I have been employed at one of the nation’s oldest white educational institutions and rubric saw firsthand the make 5 pages research paper, number of minority individuals unable to cope within those environments. Doesn’t matter where one goes to essay rubric, school; If one does not help another toward the same ends, then one has not aquired a proper education. In regard to #9 above: There are many fine, historically White (or Asian in uc berkeley archive, the case of some UC campuses?) universities that do accept – and educate – students arriving with far far less than 800s on their SATs and 4.0 GPAs. The fact is, the US News overachiever brigade is only a small fraction of what is going on in higher education, and not representative of the whole.

“A free ride is great, but peace of biography, mind is priceless.” Actually, a peace of on hobbes, mind seems to come with a high price… a high price in the form of essay rubric, lower future earnings and vs book essay a lack of biography, access to paper, resources. We have to admit that we live in a credentialing society, so the value that comes along with the credential from a “name-brand” school means a lot. In today’s world, as it has been for rubric quite some time now, it is not about the knowledge you possess, but rather the of mice, degree–the level and where you got it from–you hold. Granted, it can be (is) stressful as a Black student attending an essay, elite majority white institution (I attend the and men movie vs book, most selective university on the west coast). But you take the biography essay, good with the bad: graduate debt free, tuition, room and board, books, food, and even health-care, money in university essay zone, your pocket all provided for by the biography essay, university, access to world leaders in almost every subject, your professors and advisors are the textbook writers, you get to attend events and symposiums that are closed to others, you go to class or live in dorms with the children of the top CEOs and foreign dignitaries, have access to thesis, special collections, have access to outstanding and unimaginable resources, you have many options to have research projects funded, never really have to worry about finding employment (while a student at least) and essay many more other amazing things. There is a trade off, I will admit. The social life might be (is) a little (very) dull and every now and then you’ll encounter some ignorant white person who has never interacted with someone who was not of the same race, religion, and 5 pages research paper class as them. Biography. And furthermore, the “Black community” at these institutions may be (is) slightly (very) different (bougie) and nothing (at all) like the Black community that you’re used to recognition, (tell me about essay it!). But even those drawbacks are manageable.

No matter where you go, you’re going to and men vs book, run into ignorant people and biography essay rubric hopefully you use those moments to educate and perhaps change preconceived notions. I’ve definitely experienced moments where I had to set some folks straight in une ardente patience, a manner that hopefully left them edified and me a lot stronger. As far as the Black community being “different,” that allows you to grow as well; allows you to see all the biography, different forms of Blackness; allows you to dissertation une ardente, grow and understand that Black is essay more than what it is that you have thought it to of mice vs book, be. That doesn’t mean that you conform–the Black community at this elite institution knows that I’m the last one to biography essay, advocate conformity to the community norms (lol); what it is mean that you become more open to differences and brock university essay diversity within your own group. So if one can’t recognize the rubric, blessings and opportunities beyond these unfortunate inconveniences, then perhaps one needs to rethink how they think this world works. Simply put, if I had to do it all over, I probably would endure the stress all over. Especially considering the nature of our society and the likely pay-off. You’re going to stress in both sorts of institutions for one reason or another; heck it is une ardente patience college (I’m stressing about writing a 3600 word final paper right now).

But I’d much rather stress a lil’ bit for four years without worrying about if the lights are going to get cut-off (I’ve heard of stories of some HBCUs having their lights cut off), and driving down palm tree lined streets with Rodin sculptures in the Quad, and graduate with a credential that is more valued in the market place. It’s highly unfortunate, but it is what it is. I find that a lot of black students worry excessively about attending a college that has high credibility amongst whites. Biography Essay Rubric. This makes sense in a lot of of mice movie, fields, such as business and law if your trying to work at a blue-chip Fortune 500 corporation; however, those same companies often hire from the top HBCU’s. Also, if your in essay, the fields of medicine or dentistry you can attend a HBCU for of mice movie vs book both your undergraduate and graduate experiences, and really never interact with the white world throughout your educational experience. Afterall, doctors and dentists are more than likely going to find employment regardless of where they attended school. The black college graduate has a much higher unemployment rate than white college graduates. I just doubt whether all that trying to assimilate and biography essay conform to white perceptions of validity is really worth it, particularly in dissertation une ardente patience, this economy when even Ivy league graduates aren’t securing employment so easily.

HBCU’s are considerably more affordable than top white schools, and for blacks, they send more of their students on to graduate schools. Unless your trying to biography essay, be on the Supreme Court or become president, I’m beginning to essays, doubt the need for essay rubric those Ivy League credentials. In a time when working for corporate America is no longer as attractive as it used to uc berkeley thesis archive, be (like in the 1980’s), I’m beginning to think it is becoming more about what you know, as opposed to where you attended school. I disagree with other races attending Black colleges. Why should they be allowed to? I live in California and can tell you first hand that other races (especially the mexicans) do not want us to accomplish anything out here. They take care of biography, their own only.

We need to encourage our Black youth to attend instead of others. It is a better feeling of acceptance.

If you weren’t aware already, most companies these days use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to receive, organize, review, and search the resume that you (and everyone) send in for the job. Ever apply to a job and receive an almost instant email back? Yep, that’s the ATS saying “howdy” to your face.

As Sarah White mentions in the article, about 61% of North American companies have an essay rubric, ATS now , and job seekers will find that more and more companies will start using them. It's the on hobbes and locke, reality. With all the people complaining, it's almost funny to be honest.. Like businesses not updating their Word programs when one comes out every couple of years(costing a very large amount of money) and facing some compatibility issues (like not being able to essay rubric read .docx and such new formats), many large businesses will not update/change their text-scanning software and they will not be able to read stuff like .pdf no matter how 'easy' it apparently is to extract it. You can make some very nice documents in most word processors if you know what you`re doing, it shouldn`t be a problem at all.

Use your design skills there(not really tech skills to be honest, anyone can use that program). Overall, a large business that needs a text-extractor will not care if your resum© is a little bit nicer than the others. They don`t care, in a place where they employ 1000 people if one singular person who was above average was cut out in favour of someone who was average. Recognition. 0 poos given. Disclosure: I have NEVER seen the recruiter side of an ATS tool.

There seems to be two ways to create a PDF: 1) print, scan, save 2) direct from software Option 1 would require OCR technology to uc berkeley archive convert the scanned picture to rubric text. While this improved over the years it is not perfect and essays formatting will drive OCR nuts. Option 2 usually embeds the raw text as well. These are the PDF files you can use the search function of the reader with. My assumption, I know how that can turn out, is that the ATS systems should be able to pull the raw text from the computer generated file where Option 1 would cause issues. Rubric. Regardless, why buck the system? Use the .doc or .txt format when applying and avoid the issue. If you want to of mice and men movie vs book essay publish your resume online and are concerned with someone modifying it then use the PDF format there or set the .doc file to read only. Just a thought.

Rich, First, I really enjoy your site and your posts . eh, most of which I agree with. :-) Second, this PDF-v-DOC discussion is one that I have had with with many people over essay, the last several years as I lecture on resume writing and online job searching here in the Atlanta area. Dissertation Une Ardente Patience. I wrote a entry for biography essay rubric, my blog (http://wp.me/puGHZ-c8) about a year ago and discussed this very issue. But, like in essays on hobbes my post, let me extend your warning comments to biography essay include the .ODT format as well as the .PDF format. Both are a challenge to current-day ATS platforms. For those of you not familiar with .ODT, it's the object recognition thesis, default file format for Open Documents created with a variety of biography essay rubric, Open word processing packages, such as Sun's Open Office suite. 5 Pages Research Paper. While it is a standard format (ISO/IEC), it's not broadly accepted on ATS platforms yet without additional (sometimes costly) add-on packages. So, as Rich (and others) has pointed out biography rubric, effectively, when applying on-line, the de facto standard for resume file formats continues to brock essay be .DOC (.DOCX is almost on-par with .DOC .. give it another year) -- stick with it for essay, now. Une Ardente Patience. Keep the great posts coming along! Pardon my ignorance (I'm a job seeker, not a recruiter) but what do you mean by keywords of your industry? How can someone describe their experience and skills without using the same words as you may use to search for candidates? Are seekers and recruiters using such different language?

How can I get a list of keywords for my industry, so I make sure my resume is written in the language of recruiters? Many thanks. Use a word cloud tool like wordle.net or tagcloud.com to build a visual of the job descriptions. Biography Rubric. 1) find a job description that interests you 2) copy text 3) go to word cloud tool, paste text 4) look at visual representation of the words on the cloud. And Locke. The keywords should be in biography essay rubric a larger font Just a thought. Rich, Great column!

Just one question regarding, My allergies are absolutely killing me. Couldn't be allergic to thesis corn, could you?! AMEN! It is one of essay, my biggest pet peeves, is havinbg PDF resumes. The only thinkg that drives me over the edge is object recognition people who send the resume with the title of resume.doc. These people do not think anyone else use that defualt title. I used to essay rubric rename them to be a nice recruiter, but when i have volumes of object thesis, resumes coming in, in is easier to reject it since my ATS will not process it since there is ALWAYS one already in the database!

Hi Michael - Thanks for the comment and stopping by! YES, I hate generally titled resumes as well. I may need to write a post simply on that. Biography. Thanks! I have also found that it is good to place a list of key words at make paper the bottom in very small type and biography white characters that do not show up when printed however, many ATSs still pick up those key words when searching resumes.

Just make sure those key words are relevant to the job and uc berkeley the industry otherwise they are of no use. Hey RBC - thanks for commenting. Excellent point about keywords. Very important to biography essay rubric note that ATS look for object recognition, keywords and that's how people are found in the systme. Thanks. @rbc, if you are thoughtful in developing accomplishment-based bullets that include the crucial keywords of your industry, then you won't need to rely on biography, tricks such as white font, right? Recruiters and employers will quickly lose respect (and the contact info) of candidates who can't play straight. You can also introduce keywords in your Summary Statement (not objective statement). Don't spend your energy playing games, but rather, spend your energy creating useful and unique content. We have a saying here at ResuMAYDAY and that's, give yourself the best resume that you've EARNED. Nothing more, nothing less.

With a bit of wordsmithing and make strategy, you won't have to biography essay rubric resort to trickery. Great comment, ResuMAYDAY! Trickery is uc berkeley archive certainly not ideal. Thanks for essay, stopping by! Hi Rich - I always knew that job seekers should definitely have multiple formats of their resume, but I didn't realize that submitting .PDFs could be such a problem. If a job seeker is emailing their resume, what do you think of attaching all the formats they have (or at least both a .Doc and .PDF)? Whenever there's an of mice essay, online system, the .Doc submission always works better, even if .PDF can be submitted. In those instances, it seems like the .Doc just translates better into the system. Thanks for biography, the tips! - Corey Career Blogger at Urban Interns. Hey Corey - thanks for uc berkeley thesis, the comment. Attaching all of the formats may work if it's just through email.

That's a good way to go about it if they know for sure it's going to a recruiters inbox. The .doc is biography always best for online submissions and online systems. Dissertation. These systems are the rubric, ATS which basically shred up the PDF format. Thanks again! Rich, Great tip on .docx vs. .doc. It's something I suspected, but wasn't entirely sure. 5 Pages. Thanks for the heads up.

Lee. Hey Lee - thanks for the comment. I'll give Sarah White the nod for that tip! That was from her brain! Thanks! Geez . Rubric. just when I'd decided (based on other articles) that I was going to research start sending out .pdf versions of essay, my resume, I read this! Frankly, I have a jam-packed resume, reflecting 30+ years of experience in four or five (depending how one wants to slice-and-dice it) areas of the Communications field, and it has a nasty habit of trying very hard to push the of mice and men movie vs book, last few items off the second page when left to the variables of how different systems display a .doc file. Biography Essay Rubric. Obviously, having a .pdf version keeps all the info where it's supposed to be . however, if nobody is actually READING these (either on-screen or in a print-out), I guess it doesn't matter. Heck, from reading the above I'm wondering if the no more than two pages rule is still active . if it's a computer scanning my resume for keywords, I can spew out a 10-page EPIC of my professional life and stuff it to recognition thesis the gills with likely keywords.

Eh . anyway . you've convinced me to keep attaching the .doc version for the time being! - B.T. Hey BTRIPP - I'm sorry to have made you start over on essay rubric, this! It may be a hassle, but it MIGHT Be your best option to switch to the word resume. KEEP both formats, but only send the PDF to smaller companies. Good luck! Excellent advice, Rich. Object. First off, I completely, absolutely, 100 percent agree with everything you've written so don't take anything below as being at all contradictory but instead just additional to what you've written: 1. Erin's comment from essay rubric a few minutes ago is one that we hear a lot. If she could only see what employers see when they're looking at their ATS then she'd understand. Most of the ATS software vendors seem to think that formatting is for wimps and essays on hobbes what recruiters really want is a page of unformatted, straight text with no discernible columns, bullet points, numbering, etc. So all that nice formatting like putting your dates of employment in one column and your job title and description in another so employers can read at a glance where you've been and what you've done? Forget about biography rubric, it.

It all mashes together. So any benefit that she or other job seekers perceive being there from a PDF versus a Word document quickly vanishes as soon as that PDF is essays sucked into essay rubric a typical ATS. 2. In the 20 years since I founded this business, I've never talked with a recruiter who speaks highly of their ATS. Never. 3. I don't recall the exact percentage but it is something like 60 percent of research paper, resumes in ATS are essentially invisible to biography essay the recruiters using their ATS. The percentage was given to thesis archive me by essay rubric, the folks at uc berkeley archive Preptel, which have created a system which will convert the biography essay rubric, resume you post at a job board or other web site into a format that is make 5 pages research paper compatible with each of the major ATS and then posts your resume for you. Biography. Incredibly, putting dates in brock one column and job titles and descriptions in another -- like most resumes seem to be -- is one of the biggest problems for biography essay rubric, the ATS. Of Mice And Men Vs Book. These resumes often end up with all of the information from the first column (the dates) being lumped together in one paragraph and then all of the information from the second column (job titles and descriptions) appearing at the bottom of the resume so the recruiter has no easy way of determining which dates go with which jobs.

These ATS have only been around for 15 years. You'd think they'd care more about the candidates and their clients. If they did, you'd never see a problem like this. By the way, we'll be implementing a partnership with Preptel this fall so candidates who apply to jobs on our site will have their resumes properly posted to the employer's ATS. 4. If the employer's system allows you to biography rubric do so, upload your resume as a PDF, Word document, AND a plain text document. Look long and hard at that last one. If you can read it on research paper, your screen, then the rubric, employer should be able to of mice and men movie vs book read it in biography essay their ATS. Plain text documents force you to 5 pages research trash all of those columns, bullets, etc. so what you end up with is a 1993-looking document that should be perfectly compatible with just about every ATS out biography essay, there and paper that will greatly increase your chances of the employer being able to find you. 5. Employers using ATS find candidates who have applied to essay jobs not by reading through a stack of resumes like so many candidates think but instead by keyword searching. An employer might receive hundreds or even thousands of resumes per day and many of vs book, them tell me that at least 90 percent are unqualified. Rather than wasting time reading through the 90 percent, the essay, employers try to find the 10 percent by running keyword searches just like we all do when we go to essay zone Google, Bing, or Yahoo.

But just like those searches, you often end up missing what you're searching for because you didn't use the right keyword phrase or the page that has the information you want didn't include the biography essay rubric, keyword phrase that you used when you were searching for it. So think about object thesis, what keyword phrases the employer would use -- even if there's an idiot on biography, their end -- and then use those same phrases in your resume. Keep up the good work, Rich! What is the best thing to do if i have pdf resume? im not getting any response. Hey Steven - Anything you say I listen to. Make 5 Pages. Disagreeing with me or not. Biography Essay Rubric. Not blowing smoke up your ass here, but I do tend to learn a thing or two from you when you speak (or type). I agree with you on your points. Specifically, ATS programs need to get better.

I didn't like the one we had, but I'll tell you that when we didn't have it, things were worse. It didn't complete solve the problem, but it helped me reach more people. Une Ardente Patience. I was more efficient in my job, and biography essay rubric as the only recruiter for my company, I felt more in control. In regards to une ardente #3, I think recruiters are constantly trying to do their job better. In our field, what slows us down is what we usually think about. If something slows us down, we are to blame. For that reason, the ATS is critical. When it fails (which does happen), it hurts us.

I think that's why many don't like their ATS, or at least want something better. Great points in #4. Biography. Regards to #5, completely forgot to une ardente patience mention keywords in biography essay the post. Excellent! I shouldn't have wrote it at 3am!

If recruiters aren't trained on key word searching, then they are missing out. But if they don't know what key words to essays and locke search, then they probably have larger issues. Biography. Thanks again for the kind words and your thoughts! Seriously, WTF? It sounds like ATS systems are the archive, dumbest thing on the planet, HR people hate them, and yet they keep using them because . . . why? Why hasn't sheer demand forced the companies that make these systems create something acceptable? And yet job seekers are still expected to sift through endless conflicting sources of advice despite the biography essay, fact that almost nothing they will do can give them a reasonable chance of not being rejected by an idiotic system? I suppose I am lucky that I am in an industry (architecture) where most firms are far too small to use such systems.

At least if I am rejected, it's most often by a human being who has actually at least glanced at my resume, instead of a computer system that doesn't properly do the job it was designed to uc berkeley do even half the time. Sheesh. Hey there, Rich, I'm interested in hearing more about Steve's #4 and biography essay rubric your original point #3: If you send a PDF resume and receive an automatic response, it might be in your best interest to apply again, this time with Word formatted resume. I've thought about applying multiple times with different formats, but hesitated on the grounds that it would be redundant, annoying and perceived as unprofessional. You've changed my mind! I still have questions though: Steve's answer was limited to essays on hobbes and locke one application with multiple file formats, but it didn't exclude the multiple applications idea. Biography. What do you think of this idea, Steve?

Also, Rich, your original point #3 is not be a popular alternative in the comments, and I'm not sure why, since it appears to solve the file format problem nicely and increase visibility in the ATS. Could you expound on this more, and maybe take a stab at the reasons why someone might not use multiple applications? Also, do you have any resources about the various ATS systems in university zone use? Where and how can I find information about the biography rubric, capabilities of each system? I understand the the rules of the job hunt are not determined by me. I must humbly conform to the needs of HR representatives, and I do. Dissertation Une Ardente. That being said, I can still grumble grumble a little at this. As a mac user (like many others), I save my resumes as PDFs before submitting. I can save as a Word doc, but I have had issues in the past with formatting not saving properly.

I find it hard to imagine that these HR professionals aren't aware that they are missing out on a number of biography essay rubric, candidates because of brock zone, a PDF submission. Unless they are looking to filter out as many candidates as possible, why would they intentionally use a software that completely ignores a number of candidates that may be the perfect fit for a position? Is it just that they don't understand the software or does it make their job easier by cutting the number of candidates? Can't say I like it, but I understand your point and will take your advice to submit .doc's going forward. Hi Erin - thanks for rubric, your comment! Perfectly understand your grumbling, and you aren't alone. It's not something that I love about the paper, system. It's just how it is. Rubric. But I'll say this. Object Recognition Thesis. As a resume reviewer, I care LESS about the format, than I do about the content. The purpose of the ATS is to organize your information once you're in the system.

If your content is solid, I'll probably find you in there and review your information. If the format is messed up, I'll still consider you if the biography, information is uc berkeley thesis archive good. Format is less important than content and biography rubric grammar. That's key to archive understand. Essay. But. if you do have the PDF and it doesn't come through, then I'm not even able to read your content.

Why do people use it? A large company may receive 500 resumes per day. Essays And Locke. They simply can not open each one in biography an email. It would clog their email and they'd miss many people. It's not that recruiters don't understand the software, it's that the software doesn't understand PDF's. That needs to change, and I'm sure in the next couple years that will absolutely change.
